Miralon® Products for Specialty Additive Applications

When looking to add wear and corrosion resistance, electrical properties, increased strength or stiffness to a coating, adhesive or plastic application, Miralon® dispersed products offer a solution with very low loading percentages.

High Aspect Ratio - an Advantage for Coatings, Adhesives and Composites

Miralon dispersed products are comprised of bundles of CNTs with very large aspect ratios(~1 mm in length and ~0.05 mm in width apaint_0264.jpgnd height). This high aspect ratio assists in connectivity and strength at very low loadings, useful in coating, adhesive and plastic applications. An example is a CNT-loaded epoxy adhesive for ESD protection, which uses a 0.05% loading of Miralon to achieve kilo ohm level resistance.   Even with a low amount of CNTs, the long narrow bundles form a connecting network.  The adhesion strength and flexibility of the neat adhesive are maintained, since a minimal quantity of CNT is used.  Another example is corrosion-resistant paint loaded with ~0.1% Miralon.  The CNT loaded paint decreases rusting, while improving scratch resistance, and retaining other inherent paint properties.

Electrical Applications - ESD, EMI, and High Frequency Shielding

Another feature of our dispersed product is the ability to tailor electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties by adjusting the overall loading percentage.  As an example, by adjusting the amount of CNTs in a CNT-polymer composite, you can vary the resistance of the material, thus tuning its electrical properties. The resulting surface resistivity values can range from 10e8 ohms/sq to 10e2 ohm/sq (ESD and EMI ranges) depending upon the loading %.  Percolation curve studies of electrical resistivity for CNT-polymer composites show that the amount and dispersion level of CNTs play a critical role in properties.  Other studies have shown Miralon materials can enhance electrical shielding properties over a wide frequency range (200 MHz to 40 GHz).

CNT-Polymer Composites - Thermoplastics and Thermosets

Miralon dispersed products can be used as additives in most thermoset thermoplastic systems,

The CNT composite can be pelletized and used as a masterbatch, or as is, for further plastic processing (e.g, injection, compression, cast or blow molding, thermoforming, etc.).  The CNT composite filaments are also being used in 3D additive manufacturing.  Thermoset composites (e.g., polyesters and epoxies) have been made by dispersing Miralon in resins, followed by curing.  Adding Miralon CNTs to thermoset epoxies increases the strength and stiffness properties compared to those of the neat polymer and enhances electrical, thermal and environmental properties.

Material Availability

Dispersed products are currently available in limited kg batch quantities in a dry pulp format, with capacity expansions that will enable tonnage quantities over the next 18 months.  Other formats such as master batch (at various loading percentages) and 3-D printing filament are able to be produced on-site in evaluation quantities. Nanocomp is actively developing partnerships within the plastics and additives communities to facilitate dispersed product processing solutions. Miralon dispersed products can be processed via industry standard methods of injection and compression molding techniques.
